Wike Reclaims Total Control of Rivers with APC, Wins 20 Out of 23 LGAs as Fubara Loses Again
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a sweeping victory in the Rivers State local government elections, clinching 20 out of the 23 chairmanship and councillorship seats contested on Saturday.
With this results, Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) minister Nyesom Wike through the APC has taken firm and total control of Rivers politics .
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling party in the state under Governor Siminalayi Fubara, managed to win only three local government areas in the poll conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
In a major political upset, Governor Fubara also lost his own Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area to the APC, further signaling his dwindling influence in the state.
Announcing the results at the RSIEC headquarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, on Sunday, the commission’s chairman, Dr. Michael Odey, declared that the elections were largely successful across the 23 LGAs.
The outcome is being seen as a consolidation of political control by former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, whose influence in the state has continued to overshadow that of his successor.
