The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has announced a dramatic surge in membership, surpassing 800,000, following an influx of high-profile defections from both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
At a weekend press conference in Port Harcourt, ADC state spokesman Luckyman Egila described the party as “a beautiful bride” attracting prominent political figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Egila revealed that former Rivers State governors Rotimi Amaechi and Celestine Omehia have officially joined the ADC, along with several other influential politicians.
Among the latest entrants are Prince Uche Secondus, ex-National Chairman of the PDP; former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Austin Okpara; and former Minister of Transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo.
“These persons have left their former parties and are now full members of the ADC,” Egila said. “And you can only become a member of a party when you have registered with that party and been issued a membership card. So all of them are now fully registered ADC members.”
Egila emphasized that the arrival of such high-profile politicians signals a significant political shift in Rivers State, noting that the ADC is now positioning itself as a major contender for the 2027 elections.
“The names I have mentioned are all key politicians in Rivers State, and you can’t write these people off,” he added.
This wave of defections marks one of the most notable political realignments in Rivers politics in recent memory, setting the stage for a fiercely contested electoral season.
