A massive earthquake has hit Russia’s Far East, triggering a huge tsunami that had hit several countries along the Pacific Coast.
The quake , which measured 8.8 on the Richter’s Scale, is reported to be the single largest since 14 years, and the sixth biggest in global history.
It struck at 11.25 local time.
The epicentre is said to be a small island settlement of about 2,000 inhabitants, and initial reports said there was only minor damage.
However, the quake triggered a tsunami that has hit coastline areas of Hawaii, Japan, China, Indonesia, New Zealand and Alaska in the United States of America.
In Hawaii, tidal waves of up to three metres ( about 10 feet) were expected and massive evacuation of residents of low – lying areas got underway in the country and others.
In Japan, the evacuation of 1.9m people has begun , while China, Indonesia and New Zealand issued tsunami alerts and scrambled evacuation plans.
