President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s election into the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the 2026–2027 biennium, describing the victory as a renewed vote of confidence in the nation’s maritime capabilities and its constructive role in global shipping governance.
Nigeria was re-elected into Category C of the IMO Council during the organisation’s General Assembly in London on Friday, November 28, marking the country’s return to the council after being absent for 14 years.
President Tinubu said the outcome demonstrates the international community’s trust in Nigeria’s commitment to maritime safety, security, environmental protection, and adherence to rules-based global maritime operations.
He commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, officials of the ministry, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and Nigeria’s diplomatic team for their strategic engagement and professionalism throughout the campaign.
According to the President, the new mandate aligns with his administration’s broader objective of unlocking the country’s blue economy potential, expanding maritime infrastructure, strengthening anti-piracy measures, and enhancing Nigeria’s position as a regional shipping hub.
Tinubu assured the global maritime community that Nigeria remains committed to promoting safer seas, cleaner oceans, efficient maritime transport systems, and a fair, innovative approach to global maritime regulation.
He expressed gratitude to member states for their support, pledging that Nigeria will honour the confidence placed in it through active participation and sustained leadership in advancing international maritime goals.
