Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has revealed that former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s 2023 flagbearer, Peter Obi, are being considered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as potential candidates for the 2027 presidential election.
In an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, Mohammed disclosed that PDP governors are already engaging in discussions with “celebrated politicians” across party lines, stressing that the party remains open to welcoming influential figures who can strengthen its prospects ahead of 2027.
When asked if the PDP governors were in direct talks with Obi, the Bauchi governor confirmed ongoing engagements.
“Have you not seen him in boats several times? Have you not seen him with me? He’s my brother, my friend. And of course, he’s one of the most celebrated politicians too. Within the coalition or outside it, we are not sleeping — only that we don’t make noise,” Mohammed stated.
He further disclosed that he had personally spoken with Jonathan about a possible return to the presidential race under the PDP, noting that he once vowed to step aside for the former president if he chose to run.
“I was the first person to say that if he runs, I will not run. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why I said we should just go and sleep,” he said.
The Bauchi governor also hinted at conversations with other political heavyweights, including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, suggesting that his rejoining the PDP could not be ruled out.
“Amechi is free to come back if he wants to. I have spoken to so many people, not just him or Obi. These are only the key people I mentioned,” Mohammed added.
Mohammed stressed that the PDP is strategically reaching out behind the scenes to politicians who might return or align with the party, in order to broaden its chances in the 2027 contest.
According to him, “PDP is open to all those celebrated politicians who can come and add value to our presidential drive in 2027.”
