….Says Abraham Lincoln, Mandela Serve Only One Term
Peter Obi, former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has vowed to serve only one term if elected President in 2027. In a statement posted on his X handle on Sunday, Obi drew inspiration from leaders like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, who he said led with integrity despite short tenures.
“History shows that the longer many African leaders remain in power, the more likely they are to be corrupted by it,” Obi said.
He stressed that leadership is defined by accountability, not duration. His vow, he said, is “sacrosanct” and rooted in his belief that effective leadership doesn’t require a lifetime.
“I will serve only one term of four years if elected President. And that vow is sacrosanct,” he declared.
Referencing historical leaders, Obi wrote, “One of the greatest American Presidents, Abraham Lincoln, served only four years… John F. Kennedy… Mandela… chose to serve only one term… Longevity in office is not a mark of success… It is purposeful, accountable service…”
He acknowledged public distrust in politicians but said his own track record proves his integrity.
“My vow to serve only one term of four years is a solemn commitment… I maintain without equivocation: if elected, I will not spend a day longer than four years in office… Forty-eight months is enough for any leader who is focused and prepared to make a meaningful difference.”
