Labour Party May Collapse In Lagos
Labour Party may finally collapse in Lagos State following the appointment of a new caretaker committee, allegedly aided by the member of the House of Representatives for Ojo Federal Constituency, Hon Seyi Sowunmi, allegedly without adequate representation from Igbo people in the State.
Members of the Party of the Igbo extraction, who contributed immensely to the success of the party in the state, are threatening to pull out enmasse to join another political party over their alleged exclusion from the party’s key executive positions in the state.
Hon. Seyi Sowunmi allegedly submitted the list of the Lagos State new executive members, which was approved and signed by the embattled factional Chairman and Secretary of Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Esther Namadi and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, respectively.
However, the list sighted contained the names of other ethnic groups with few positions for Igbo people, mostly in deputyship positions, which development has triggered the crisis across the 57 Local Councils in the state and yet it was approved by the Acting National leadership.
Those who supported the list purport that one Mr. Femi Ferguson is an Igbo man, “which was outrightly rejected because such a name does not exist in the entire Igbo land”.
This was confirmed by Chief John Uche, who is the Deputy Apex Labour Party leader, Lagos State, and Special Adviser on Political Matters to the House of Representatives member, Hon. Okey-Joe Onuachusi.
Chief Uche explained that it was a great shock to Igbo people who had sacrificed a lot for the success of Labour Party in Lagos State.
He added that it was a ploy to sell Labour Party to another political party in Lagos State during upcoming elections and alleged that the plan was hatched by Hon. Sowunmi, who is now seen as an enemy of Ndigbo in Lagos State.
Chief Uche asked how it is possible that no single Igbo person was deemed fit to belong to the State Executives and yet they are in the majority in Labour Party in the state.
He said that the Igbo stakeholders had already mobilized the apex Igbo organization, Ohanaeze, which he is the founder, the Igbo- Speaking Community, Lagos, Market leaders, town unions and others and informed them that “Ndigbo have no business being in Labour Party and it will be communicated to Mr. Peter Obi about the development in the state”.
