Karol Nawrocki Wins Polish Presidential election
Poles have elected a new president.
He is 42- year old Karol Nawrocki, who is considered an ultra- conservative leader.
He got just 50 per cent of the votes cast in the keenly contested poll held on Sunday.
The victory means that political leadership of Poland is now split between the conservative President- elect and the progressive Prime Minister, Donald Tusk.
Poland operates a parliamentary model of political structure where the Prime Minister is the head of the government, while the President is the Head of State.
But unlike most other Parliamentary- modelled states, the President, who holds a titular office, has a veto in the Parliament, meaning he / she can overrule the decisions of the government.
One potential point of disagreement is the war in Ukraine.
Nawrocki is a consistent critic of Ukraine ‘s aspiration into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO, and what he calls the interference of the European Union (EU) in the internal affairs of member states.
