Ibadan, Oyo State
Under the blazing stadium lights of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Adamasingba, Ibadan, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delivered one of the most electrifying political moments in recent years—an explosive Elective National Convention that has now reshaped the future of Nigeria’s opposition politics.
In a night charged with anticipation, roaring delegates, and the unmistakable energy of political rebirth, Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), a seasoned statesman and former Minister of Special Duties, surged to a near-unanimous victory as the new National Chairman of the PDP. His emergence became a dramatic turning point after Senator Yakubu Lado’s withdrawal cleared the path for a consensus wave that swept through the stadium.
At the same historic gathering, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, known for his grassroots strength and strategic influence in the South, clinched the coveted position of National Secretary, sealing a leadership duo many within the party have hailed as the team destined to revive PDP’s national dominance.
More than 3,000 delegates from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory thronged the venue—an extraordinary show of force and unity for a party long battling internal fractures.
Guiding the tense electoral atmosphere with steady authority, Senator Ben Obi oversaw a voting process that party elders described as “flawless, transparent, and impossible to ignore.” Cheers erupted repeatedly as results were announced, marking what analysts already call “the beginning of the PDP renaissance.”
As dawn broke over Ibadan on November 16, one thing became unmistakably clear:
The PDP has not only chosen new leaders—it has signaled its return as a formidable contender on the road to the 2027 general elections.
