Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 81
London, July 13, 2025 – Nigeria’s immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has passed away. He died this afternoon at a private clinic in London after a period of critical illness.
The news was confirmed in a brief statement issued by his longtime spokesperson and media adviser, Garba Shehu, on behalf of the family.
> “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un.
The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
May Allah accept him into Aljannatul Firdaus. Ameen.”
Buhari first came to national prominence as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1984 to 1985, following a coup. After several unsuccessful attempts at the presidency, he was eventually elected in 2015 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) — a coalition that reshaped Nigeria’s political landscape.
He served two terms as Nigeria’s democratically elected President, from 2015 to 2023, becoming a defining figure in the country’s 21st-century political history.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements and national honors are expected to be announced by the presidency.
May his soul rest in peace.
