Nigeria’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Joy Ogwu, has passed away at the age of 79 in a hospital in New York.
Professor Ogwu served as Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister from August 2006 until May 2007, at the close of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.
A distinguished scholar of international relations, she was later appointed by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York — a position she held for nine years, spanning the administrations of Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.
Earlier in her career, Professor Ogwu was the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), where she earned wide acclaim for her expertise in disarmament and global diplomacy.
