Dino Melaye, former senator representing Kogi West, has officially exited the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), pointing to what he called the party’s dwindling ability to provide effective leadership and tackle Nigeria’s pressing political issues.
Senator Melaye made this public on Thursday via a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, where he shared a signed resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman in his local ward — Ward 1 Aiyetoro Gbede, in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
In the letter, Melaye voiced his dissatisfaction with the party’s direction, saying:
“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”
Having been the PDP’s candidate in the 2023 Kogi governorship race, Melaye said he had given the matter significant thought and could no longer align himself with the party’s operations.
“I have carefully reflected on the state of the party” and could no longer “in good conscience participate in the activities of the parties or lend [his] support to her agenda.”
He stated that his resignation is effective immediately and applies across all levels of party involvement.
“Thank you for the opportunity to serve under the platform during my period of membership,” he wrote in conclusion.
Although Melaye has not yet announced any new political alignment, his departure may affect both the PDP’s influence in Kogi State and the broader national political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
