Delta State Taskforce on Environment Evacuates Traders from PTI/Osubi Junction
In a swift and proactive move to safeguard lives and property, the Delta State Taskforce on Environment, under the headship of its Chairman, Chief Godspower Omafuvwe Asiuwhu JP, has evacuated traders and dismantled makeshift shops situated at the PTI/Osubi Junction in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area.
The action was taken to ensure a hazard-free work environment, on the ongoing relocation and installation of the giant 330KVA high-tension power line.
The initiative, which coincides with the commissioning of the new power infrastructure aimed at boosting electricity supply across Delta State and beyond, was described by the chairman as a critical safety measure.
He commended Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for his visionary leadership and monumental strides in reshaping Delta State through landmark infrastructural projects.
According to Chief Asiuwhu, “The role of any responsible government is to ensure the safety of lives and property at all times. The current administration led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is committed to preventing avoidable disasters and ensuring that development does not come at the cost of human safety.”
He emphasized the dangers of trading or erecting structures under high-tension cables, noting that electromagnetic radiation from such lines poses severe health risks.
He reminded the public that a minimum clearance distance must be observed between buildings and high-tension installations for safety compliance.
The Taskforce Chairman also warned market leaders and traders to desist from conducting business under power lines, urging them to relocate to safer zones.
“Structures under high-tension lines are ticking time bombs. We cannot afford to wait for disasters before taking action,” he added.
In a related development, the Taskforce Coordinator, Comrade Frank Orogun, highlighted the importance of safety and sustainability during the evacuation exercise. He confirmed that all affected traders were successfully relocated to safer grounds, and the taskforce ensured full compliance with the relocation directive.
To maintain order during the exercise, the operation was heavily supported by security operatives, while the Taskforce team worked diligently to manage traffic flow around the construction area and minimize disruptions.
Chief Asiuwhu also used the opportunity to commend Governor Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori for engaging Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Julius Berger Nigeria Plc in the construction of flyovers, cloverleaf interchanges, and road expansions across Warri and Effurun. He described the ongoing works as “game changers” that would redefine the urban landscape of Delta State.
