Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) under President Muhammadu Buhari, has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a letter dated June 29, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of APC in Bangshika Ward, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Lawal declared:
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressive Congress.
In due course, I will make public my current political affiliations where I plan to join other compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all its citizens. This resignation takes immediate effect. Please, remain blessed and extend my warm regards to other members of your party.”
Lawal’s departure comes amid rising momentum within a new political coalition seeking to challenge the APC in the 2027 general elections. The group—reportedly led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi—has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform.
Lawal, a key figure in the emerging alliance, emphasized that the coalition is attracting dissatisfied members from various parties. While prominent politicians like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are aligned with the initiative, Lawal stressed its independence:
“Many of us are former APC members.
Atiku and (Peter) Obi are with us, but not as official emissaries of their current platforms. This is an independent initiative aimed at providing a genuine alternative for Nigerians.”
