The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State has declared that former governor, Rotimi Amaechi, will be retired from active politics after the 2027 general elections.
The Director-General of the Ikwerre APC Campaign Organisation for the August 30 local government election, Obinna Ekem, made the declaration while addressing supporters at the party’s grand rally in Omagwa community.
Ekem expressed confidence that the APC would sweep all 13 wards in the upcoming polls, citing strong assurances from residents. He added that beyond the council elections, the party was preparing for 2027, assuring a landslide for President Bola Tinubu despite Amaechi’s opposition alliance.
According to him, Ikwerre remains firmly in the grip of the APC, even though it is the home base of Amaechi, who recently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He argued that during Amaechi’s tenure as APC leader, the party suffered serial defeats, but with his exit, its chances have greatly improved.
Ekem urged President Tinubu to focus on national rivals such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark, assuring that Amaechi would be politically neutralised at the grassroots level.
Also speaking, Rivers State APC Chairman, Tony Okocha—backed by the party’s national leadership—charged Ikwerre residents not to allow any single political party to dominate the forthcoming elections. He assured that the process would be more credible than the October 2024 polls, which were annulled by the Supreme Court following irregularities under suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
