The Labour Party Leader and 2023 Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, has once again expressed deep concern over what he described as the persistent prioritisation of politics over governance by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.
In a statement issued in Abuja today by his spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, Obi faulted the reported distribution of campaign vehicles and electioneering materials by the Federal Government at a time when the nation is confronted with severe economic hardship and escalating insecurity.
Reacting through his official X handle on Thursday, Obi said the action reflects “a profound insensitivity and a grave abuse of public trust.”
According to him, “At a time when Nigerians are struggling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity, the decision of any government to allocate limited public resources for distributing luxury vehicles like Hilux trucks and Hummer buses as part of the 2027 campaign mobilisation is not only insensitive but also represents a serious moral failure.”
He lamented that while ordinary citizens battle poverty and hopelessness, leaders continue to parade extravagant lifestyles, “driving brand-new Land Cruisers, Hiluxes, and Hummers, treating the suffering of the people as mere background for political theatrics.”
Obi described such conduct as a tragic misplacement of priorities that is “completely unacceptable.”
The former Anambra State Governor emphasised that leadership in times of national distress should be focused on providing food for the hungry, expanding access to quality healthcare, restoring hope for unemployed youths, and ensuring community security, not on displaying luxury vehicles or campaigning for future elections.
He expressed dismay that children continue to drop out of school due to inability to pay fees, maternal mortality remains high due to lack of basic medical supplies, and insecurity continues to tear families apart—yet government resources are being channelled towards political mobilisation.
“This is not governance. It reflects a profound insensitivity and an abuse of public trust disguised as a political strategy,” Obi stated.
He added that such behaviour betrays the essence of public service, which must always be rooted in service to the people, not political showmanship.
Obi urged Nigerians and those in leadership positions to recognise that the nation cannot continue on a path marked by wastefulness, misplaced priorities, and disregard for citizens’ welfare.
He reaffirmed his conviction that, despite current challenges, “a New Nigeria is not only necessary; it is possible.”
