The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has slammed President Bola Tinubu for seeking a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council while failing to address worsening insecurity in Nigeria.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the move as “patently absurd,” citing the continued killings and abductions in Zamfara and Katsina States.
“Only last week, gunmen attacked a mosque in Zamfara, massacring worshippers. In two months, over 140 Nigerians have been murdered in Zamfara and Katsina alone. Amnesty International reported over 10,000 deaths from armed violence as of May 2025. How can a government that cannot secure its people demand a seat at the table of global security?” the party queried.
The ADC also condemned the President’s absence at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) passing-out parade in Kaduna, where 874 new officers were commissioned. The party said Tinubu’s decision to attend the commissioning of the renovated National Arts Theater in Lagos instead showed “misplaced priorities.”
“With the country under siege, we expected the President to inspire the new officers and reassure Nigerians. Instead, he chose a social event, signaling tragic indifference,” the statement added.
The ADC accused the government of allowing non-state actors to run a “parallel government” in Zamfara by extorting farmers and collecting illegal taxes.
“What is happening is not just insecurity, it is the loss of Nigeria’s territorial integrity. In any serious country, this would have triggered emergency action, not condolence tweets,” the party stressed.
The ADC concluded by demanding the immediate declaration of a state of emergency in Zamfara to halt the killings .
