ADC Slams Tinubu’s ₦712bn Airport Plan as Wasteful and Reckless
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the Tinubu administration’s approval of over ₦712 billion for the renovation of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, calling the move extravagant and poorly timed.

Approved during a Federal Executive Council meeting and announced by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, the project marks the first major overhaul of the airport’s terminal since its construction.

Reacting on Sunday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi questioned the justification and legality of the expenditure, especially without clear National Assembly approval.

“The African Democratic Congress strongly condemns the outrageous ₦712 billion airport renovation project… as another brazen act of fiscal recklessness and official insensitivity…” the party stated.

They argued the airport had already seen recent upgrades, including a new terminal commissioned in 2022, and remains functional. ADC emphasized that “what the aviation sector needs is not another gold-plated terminal, but proper maintenance, enhanced efficiency and the expansion of regional airports.”

They also pointed out that the airport’s current use falls well below capacity, processing only 6.5 million passengers in 2024, despite being designed for 14 million.

“We therefore wonder if it is this same airport… or another one… Either the previous APC government had lied… or the current government is about to spend… on a project that already exists.”

ADC raised concern over lack of budgetary backing and transparency, warning that such massive spending could deepen public distrust.

“₦712 billion could instead deliver transformative impact… building over seven fully equipped teaching hospitals, funding free basic education… or rehabilitating thousands of kilometres of roads…”

They called for the project’s suspension, an independent audit, and redirection of funds to pressing national needs.
