Ghana Beat South Africa To Win Bronze

Ghana, tonight, repeated its 2003 feat by defeating South Africa to win the third place and bronze medal at the 2024 edition of the Women African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Championship holding in Morocco.
They won on Penalties.
The Black Queens won by four goals to three.
The South Africans missed their third and fourth kicks , while the Black Queens of Ghana lost their fourth kick taken by Akufo.
Before the penalty kicks, both teams had played to a lone goal apiece during regulation time, following which they went straight into spot kicks.
South Africa had taken the lead in the 45th minute of play in the first half in which the Ghanaians played better.
On resumption, Ghana resumed the search for the vital equaliser and they were rewarded in the 67th minute .
Thereafter, the Ghanaians sustained their even exchanges with the South Africans and nearly got their winning second goal in the last minute of play when they hit the wood work, much to their chagrin.
By their victory,Ghana repeated their 2003 scenario when they beat South Africa in the third place match in that year’s edition of the competition.
Tonight’s game is the first time in 17 years that a third place ( so called bronze medal ) match would be decided on penalties.
Tomorrow, Nigeria face hosts, Morocco, for the top prize in the tournament.
Nigeria are the single highest winners of the top diadem, with nine victories.
It is followed by Equatorial Guinea,with two wins, and South Africa, with a solitary win at the last edition in 2022.
