Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Agunwa Anakwe, has died. He passed away on Saturday after a prolonged illness. He was 68.
His death was confirmed on Monday by the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor.
Anakwe, who was 36 at the time, led the Third Republic House of Representatives under the interim civilian administration of Chief Ernest Shonekan in 1992. He served until November 17, 1993, when the military, led by General Sani Abacha, dissolved the democratic structures following the annulment of the June 12 presidential election won by MKO Abiola.
Widely praised for his leadership style, Anakwe was known for his wisdom, composure, and ability to maintain stability in the House—qualities that earned him respect during a turbulent political era.
The family has yet to issue an official statement regarding his passing.
