The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its 2023 Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, demanding he resigns from the party due to his growing association with the opposition coalition led by former Senate President David Mark.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the spokesperson for the group, Obiora Ifoh, Obi’s involvement in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) backed coalition while still being a member of the LP is unacceptable and signals a conflict of loyalty.
“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him,” the statement read.
Ifoh criticized the coalition, alleging that its members are made up of politicians who had previously mismanaged the country.
“Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition and therefore, any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party.
Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona. The party will not avail itself to individuals who have one leg in one Party and another leg elsewhere,” he added.
This development follows the unveiling of the ADC as the official platform for the 2027 opposition alliance. At the event in Abuja, David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola were named interim National Chairman and Secretary, respectively.
High-profile politicians including Peter Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and others such as Dino Melaye, Solomon Dalong, Dele Momodu, Gabriel Suswam, Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, Sadique Abubakar and other top PDP, APC, and LP chieftains were present at the meeting.
