Delta Govt Backs Sports for Youth Empowerment
…Sets Mid-2026 Deadline for Warri Stadium Completion
The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to using sports as a powerful tool for human capital development, youth empowerment, and infrastructure advancement across the state.
This was emphasized during the 2025 Olympic Day Run held in Asaba, with the global theme, “Let’s Move,” which promotes fitness, inclusivity, and the Olympic ideals of excellence, respect, and friendship.
Speaking at the event, Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by his Chief of Staff, Prince Johnson Erijo, highlighted the importance of sports in the state’s long-term development strategy.
He stated that the ongoing renovation of the Warri City Stadium was progressing steadily and would be completed and opened to the public by mid-2026, marking another milestone in Delta’s sports infrastructure rollout.
The governor emphasized that sports go beyond competition as they remained
essential for empowering young people, enhancing community health, and providing opportunities for education, employment, and social advancement.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Hon. Onoriode Oborevwori, represented by the Acting Director- General, (DG) Emuobo Egalase, described the Olympic Day Run as a timely call to action that reignites public interest in the values of unity and healthy living.
She noted that the state’s focus on grassroots development and strategic investment in sports had continued to yield remarkable results.
Egalase proudly recalled that Delta State emerged as the overall champion at the recent National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, a feat that solidifies the state’s reputation as Nigeria’s leading force in sports development.
She attributed the victory to the dedication of athletes, coaches, and the consistent backing of the state government.
The highlight of the day’s activities was a symbolic walk that brought together athletes, students, government officials, and sports enthusiasts.
The walk started from the Stephen Keshi Stadium, moved through the Cable Point Traffic Light Roundabout, and returned to the stadium, all amidst music, funfair, and a celebratory atmosphere.
Olympic Day is globally celebrated to commemorate the founding of the modern Olympic Movement in 1894, as it continues to promote sports as a means of peace, solidarity, and inclusion.
