The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the arrest of 28 individuals in connection with the recent violence in Yelwata, Benue State, which claimed the lives of 47 people.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, the IGP stated that investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to apprehend other suspects.
Egbetokun emphasized that the police are not overwhelmed by the situation, noting that a nationwide operation is underway to recover illegal light and small arms. He also revealed that security along the country’s borders is being strengthened to curb the movement of irregular migrants into the country.
The police chief further disclosed that the arrested suspects will soon be charged in court. This includes 22 individuals apprehended in Jos in connection with the killing of nine travelers en route to a wedding in Quanpan.
Clarifying the arrests, the IGP noted that two of the 28 individuals were later cleared, having been instrumental in leading authorities to the main suspects.
