A major tragedy was averted on Monday when a two-storey building under construction collapsed at No. 3 Craig Street, off Apata Road in the Shomolu area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m., according to eyewitnesses. Remarkably, no casualties or injuries were reported, as both construction workers on-site and worshippers at a nearby church managed to escape unharmed.
The collapse caused partial damage to the Liberty Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), which is adjacent to the construction site. Fortunately, all individuals within the church premises at the time were also reported to be safe.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident. He noted that the building gave way during the decking phase of construction.
“Preliminary investigations have shown that no one was trapped under the rubble,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated, adding that emergency responders promptly secured the area and cordoned off the site to ensure public safety.
Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the cause of the collapse and assess any potential structural violations.
