President Bola Tinubu is set to confer national honours on selected legislators on June 12, in celebration of Democracy Day.
This announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi Jr.
According to reports, both the leadership and members of the House of Representatives will take part in a Special Joint Sitting of the National Assembly scheduled for Thursday, June 12.
The President, who will serve as the special guest of honour, is expected to deliver an address to the joint session of the legislature.
“The programme will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of national honours on select legislators by Mr President,” Rotimi said.
The House Spokesman further noted that the theme for this year’s Democracy Day celebration is: “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”
Rotimi emphasized that the joint sitting is a moment of great significance in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, highlighting the National Assembly’s critical role in upholding democratic values, promoting accountability, and contributing to national progress throughout 26 years of uninterrupted civilian governance.
He encouraged citizens to mark Democracy Day in the spirit of national unity and dedication:
