Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to a statement from his personal office released Sunday.
The diagnosis followed recent medical evaluations prompted by worsening urinary symptoms. Doctors confirmed the cancer as high-grade with a Gleason score of 9, indicating a severe and fast-spreading form. However, it is reportedly hormone-sensitive, making it more manageable with appropriate treatment.
Biden and his family are currently consulting with medical professionals to determine the best course of action.
This development comes months after Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race on July 21, amid growing concerns over his health and age. His exit followed a difficult debate against Donald Trump in June, where he showed signs of cognitive and physical decline.
Under mounting pressure from party leaders and media, Biden stepped aside and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. Despite his support, Harris lost the general election to Trump. Biden served out the remainder of his term, leaving office on January 20, 2025, later describing his decision to withdraw as “difficult but necessary.”
