Labour Party Suspends Abure
The internal crisis facing the Labour Party has deepened with the National Caretaker Committee (LP-NCC), under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, announcing the suspension of factional National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, and National Secretary, Farouk Umar, for a period of six months.
The announcement, made in a statement released late Thursday and jointly signed by Senator Usman and the committee’s Secretary, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, followed recommendations by a disciplinary panel led by Senator Ireti Kingibe.
According to the statement, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party ratified the decision after receiving the investigative report from the committee chaired by Senator Kingibe and co-chaired by Chief Peter Ameh.
The report cited serious cases of alleged financial misappropriation and anti-party activities committed by Abure and his associates.
Inter alia, that, “Following an in-depth investigation, the NEC has ratified the committee’s recommendations regarding anti-party activities and gross misappropriation of party funds by the former acting National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, and others. The findings revealed significant financial misconduct which led to the following disciplinary actions:”
The NEC warned that any disregard of the disciplinary directives would attract even more severe consequences.
The party stressed its commitment to transparency, accountability and discipline in its internal operations.
This development follows recent actions by the Abure- led faction, which had announced the suspension of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe and four others over alleged anti-party activities – a move now seen in political circles as evidence of a strong power struggle within the party.
