NSCDC Detains Own Officers Over N5m Bribe Allegation
Several officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been taken into custody following allegations that they extorted ₦5.2 million from a traveller.
The move is a prelude to what insiders term a far- flung probe of the allegation.
According to a statement issued by NSCDC spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, the officers involved had been ordered to report to the Corps’ national headquarters in Abuja, where the envisaged comprehensive investigation will be conducted.
The move follows a directive from the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, demanding an immediate probe after a viral video surfaced online showing NSCDC personnel allegedly extorting money from travellers en route from Ado-Ekiti from Akure.
The Commandant-General of the Corps, Ahmed Audi, condemned the alleged behaviour of the officers.
The latest incident adds to a list of internal disciplinary actions previously taken by the NSCDC, which, in 2022, the Corps dismissed at least 15 officers for what it termed “disgraceful conduct” and sanctioned 16 others for various offenses classified as gross misconduct, all with the approval of the Civil Defence, Corrections, Fire and Immigration Board.
