The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the revocation of bail earlier granted to former Attorney-General of the Federation, Mallam Abubakar Malami, SAN, describing the action as politically motivated rather than a genuine law-enforcement measure.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said available facts do not support claims that Malami violated any of the conditions attached to his bail.
According to the ADC, the decision to revoke the bail—coming shortly after Malami’s participation in a political rally in his home state of Kebbi—creates a strong impression that the action was aimed at constraining his political activities rather than advancing the cause of justice.
“The revocation of bail under these circumstances raises serious concerns and suggests an attempt to weaponise state institutions to silence opposition figures,” the statement said.
While reaffirming its support for the EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies in the lawful discharge of their duties, the ADC warned that selective investigations and the politicisation of anti-corruption efforts erode public confidence and ultimately damage the integrity of the fight against graft.
The party cautioned that turning anti-corruption agencies into tools of political suppression not only undermines democracy but also amounts to corruption itself, stressing that justice must be pursued without fear, favour, or political bias.
