Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor announced the move on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
Fubara described his decision as a “gesture of reciprocity” to President Bola Tinubu, whom he credited for standing by his administration during the intense political crisis that engulfed the state in late 2023.
According to him, aligning with the APC was the only logical step, given the support he has continued to enjoy from the presidency.
“We can’t support Mr President if we don’t fully identify with him; not backyard support,” Fubara said.
“So, we have taken that decision today. Everyone here who followed and suffered with me — our decision today is that we are moving to the APC.”
The governor further stated that he might have been removed from office if not for the intervention and backing of President Tinubu.
“The reason why we are still standing is because of that place. Without Mr President, there wouldn’t be any His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara; it would have been a former governor,” he noted.
Fubara’s defection comes just days after 15 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martin Amaewhule, also decamped to the APC, signaling a significant realignment in the state’s political landscape.
