Benin Republic President Patrice alon “Completely Safe” as Army Moves to Quell Attempted Coup
Benin Republic President Patrice Talon is “completely safe and the national army is reasserting authority after a small group of soldiers claimed on Sunday to have overthrown his government.
Speaking to AFP, the presidency dismissed the soldiers’ announcement, describing the incident as an isolated mutiny with limited impact.
“This is a small group of people who only control the television,” the president’s office said. “The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure.”
Earlier on Sunday, a faction of soldiers had taken over a state television station, declaring that they had removed President Talon from power and seized control of state institutions.
Details about the identities of the mutineers or the extent of their support within the military remain unclear. However, authorities insist the situation is under control and that normalcy is returning.
