Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has firmly shut down speculations that he may accept a vice-presidential slot ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The clarification follows comments by Dele Momodu, a close ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, suggesting Atiku could consider Amaechi as a running mate if Labour Party’s Peter Obi declines to enter a coalition.
But Amaechi, through his media aide, David Iyofor, said he is solely focused on his presidential ambition and will not serve as a deputy to any candidate under any arrangement.
Iyofor stated that Amaechi “believes it is the turn of Southern Nigeria to produce the next President” and is therefore seeking the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“Amaechi is not seeking to be running mate to anybody. He does not intend to be a presidential running mate to anybody and will not,” Iyofor said.
“He is not aware of, and will not be part of, any discussions to make him a vice-presidential candidate. For emphasis, Amaechi is running to be President of Nigeria — not anyone’s running mate. Politicians are kindly advised to leave Amaechi’s name out of such talks.”
Amaechi has repeatedly insisted on his qualification to lead the country, citing his political trajectory and record of service. He recently noted that, “If not for the coalition agreement, the answer to whether I’ll run (for President) would have been an outright yes.”
