In a landmark political gesture , the President of America, Donald Trump, has written a letter to his Israeli counterpart , Isaac Herzog, seeking a presidential pardon for the Prime Minister of the Jewish state, Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Prime Minister is simultaneously facing multiple trials for accusations bordering on corruption, abuse of office, due process and wrongful use of influence.
The charges span a long period of time and critics say that the Prime Minister, whom Trump fondly calls *Bibi” had been using the war with Hamas as a decoy to prolong his trial and stay in office.
It was not immediately clear when Trump wrote the letter because of the scantiness of its details in the public domain, but news of its existence which was broken in the global media today, is seen as proof of the existence in the Netanyahu camp io the seriousness of the charges against him, and the desperation to deploy political.pressure to give him a soft landing, in the event of his conviction and possible imprisonment.
The Office of the Israeli President was yet to react to the letter of plea, at press time, though not a few expect that Netanyahu , on the strength of the intervention, could be pardoned if convicted.
Aside from the warm political , economic, diplomatic and military relationship between Israel and America, both Trump and Netanyahu are great mutual friends.
The case of Netanyahu is the second time that Trump would attempt to intervene in the Judicial processes of other countries.
He had tried to intimidate the President of Brazil, Luna Da Silva, from prosecuting his predecessor in office for alleged wrongdoings.
