A major confrontation broke out on Monday at Wadata Plaza, the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following a protest by supporters of Mohammed Abdulrahman, the party’s National Vice Chairman (North Central).
The demonstrators, chanting solidarity songs and brandishing placards, demanded the immediate removal of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum. They accused the Damagum-led team of poor leadership and vowed to reclaim the party headquarters on behalf of Abdulrahman’s faction.
The protest followed the Abdulrahman faction’s recent declaration naming him Acting National Chairman — a move that has intensified the PDP’s internal leadership crisis.
Last week, the Damagum-led NWC suspended National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade for one month, a decision that deepened divisions within the party. In retaliation, the Anyanwu-led group announced the suspension of Damagum and members of his NWC, appointing Abdulrahman as Acting National Chairman in a counteraction.
The escalating feud has plunged the main opposition party into further turmoil, with both camps now asserting control over the PDP’s national leadership.
Tensions heightened on Monday as Abdulrahman’s supporters converged on the PDP headquarters in Abuja to enforce their claim. Security operatives were quickly deployed to the scene to avert a violent confrontation between the opposing groups.
