The United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump has said he has directed the Department of Defense to prepare for possible military action against Nigeria if the Nigerian government “continues to allow the killing of Christians.”
According to Reuters, Trump made the disclosure in a statement posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Saturday.
The statement comes a day after Trump designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged persecution and killing of Christians.
In a follow-up statement, the U.S. government reportedly announced the immediate suspension of all aid and assistance to Nigeria.
“We may very well go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing, to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump was quoted as saying.
Trump’s comments have sparked widespread reactions across Nigeria, with many citizens and political figures expressing outrage and concern.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government have, in separate statements, rejected Trump’s designation and dismissed claims of genocide against Christians in the country.
But some people have continued to reel out reported evidences of unabating killings of citizens in parts of Nigeria especially in the social media .
