Lawmakers in Madagascar today, (October 14, 2025), impeached President Andry Rajoelina, by 130 yes votes to one blank ballot.
The latest development escalates a political crisis after the President dissolved the National Assembly following youth protests that forced him to flee into hiding.
The Presidency said the meeting was unconstitutional, adding that any decision or resolution resulting from it was “null and void” following the dissolution of the assembly.
Rajoelina has refused to step down despite weeks of youth-led protests and widespread defections in the army.
The protests had been led by youths angry at water and electricity supply shortfalls.
President Rajoelina had, on Monday night, made a video in which he said he had decided to go into hiding for his safety and well being, but failed to yield to opposition demands that he gives up power.
Tension had escalated after an elite unit of the country ‘s military , which backed the protests, announced it had taken power.
However, the African Union (AU) had warned that any coup would not be tolerated.
