The National Council of State has unanimously endorsed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga.
President Bola Tinubu formally presented Amupitan’s nomination to the Council during its meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The appointment comes as Professor Mahmood Yakubu concludes his 10-year tenure as INEC Chairman in October 2025.
Professor Amupitan, 58, is a distinguished Professor of Law from Kogi State and becomes the first person from the North-Central state to be appointed to the position.
