Starmer said that the move was to give Palestinians the dignity that they deserved more than 70 years after it firmly recognized the state of Israel with which it should share a common boundary.
The British move was followed by Canada and Australia both which today also announced similar moves.
All three countries say they would formalize the process at this week’s summit of the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA.
The announcements by all three countries which had backed Israel and America, has drawn the ire of the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who described it as a reward for Hamas .
He echoed the words of his main ally and President of America, Donald Trump, that the recognition would be counter–productive .
About 157 countries have recognized Palestine as a state.
Today’s development brings to four the number of permanent members of the United Nations Security Council UNSC that have either recognized Palestine or Saudi they would do so.
They are China, Russia, Britain and France, the last of which led the efforts to break Western unconditional support of Israel.
By the development today, America is the only permanent member of the UNSC yet to recognize Palestine.
The UNSC houses 15 members of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), ten of which are elected, and the others( China, Britain, America, Russia and France ) are permanent members
