2027: Don’t Derail Our Convention, PDP Governors Warn Wike, Others
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has insisted that the party’s forthcoming National Convention, scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, must hold as planned.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its 7th meeting in Gusau, Zamfara State, on Saturday, the governors cautioned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and other aggrieved members against actions capable of derailing the convention.
The Forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, reaffirmed its loyalty to the resolutions of the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of July 2025, which endorsed the November date.
“The Forum reaffirms its full commitment to the resolutions of the NEC regarding the National Convention and urges members to resist all attempts to derail it by anti-party forces. The PDP remains the only viable alternative for restoring Nigeria on the path of good governance and national development,” the communiqué read.
The governors also deliberated on insecurity, the erosion of democratic values, and preparations for the convention. They praised PDP leaders and members for withstanding orchestrated defections, insisting that such distractions cannot erode the party’s grassroots appeal.
Accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of “divisive governance” and policies that inflict hardship on citizens, the Forum pledged to remain focused on rescuing the country from misrule.
Describing the Ibadan convention as “sacrosanct”, the governors stressed its importance in electing new national leaders, reviewing party policies, and setting a strategic roadmap toward the 2027 general elections.
Similarly, the PDP Youth Leaders Forum threw its weight behind the exercise. Its chairman, Jamilu Ali of Gombe State, emphasized transparency and inclusivity in the process.
“We stand firmly behind the PDP National Convention and the zoning committee. November 15–16, 2025, is sacrosanct. The youth are ready to mobilize and contribute to a convention that will produce visionary leadership. #Ibadan2025 is not just a date; it is a movement for unity and victory,” Ali declared.
The Youth Forum also commended the National Working Committee (NWC) for its preparations and urged young Nigerians to join the party in shaping its future.
The warning from the PDP governors comes amid rising tension over recent comments by Nyesom Wike, who rejected the party’s zoning arrangements and insisted that his ally, Chief Dan Orbih, was duly elected as PDP National Vice Chairman (South-South) at a congress in Calabar.
Wike, who has also fallen out with some of his former G5 allies, accused the party leadership of undermining due process and warned of “another round of crisis” if Orbih’s position was not recognized.
