The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate shutdown of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, citing escalating security threats in the area.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in Minna by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman.
Usman explained that the decision followed a series of recent security incidents, including the fatal attack on a student near the campus. The incident triggered protests from the student community demanding accountability and enhanced protection measures.
“The safety of all citizens, particularly students, is a top priority for the government,” Usman said, while appealing for calm and urging the university community to support security agencies.
He stated that investigations were already underway to identify and bring to justice those responsible for the attacks.
Usman further assured that the government was taking strategic steps to restore calm and ensure safety and stability around the university environment.
The closure comes in the wake of the killing of a 300-level student, Abdulkareem, who was reportedly attacked in his off-campus accommodation by suspected phone thieves just two days earlier.
