Argentine magician, Lionel Messi, netted from a decisive free kick in the second half to give Inter Miami a deserved victory over FC Porto
The victory put Miami second on the table after Palmeras on the same four points but a lower goal difference.
Palmeras had beaten Al-Ahly of Egypt by two unreplied goals in tonight’s first game to record the first win in Group A.
FC Porto had taken the lead via a penalty by Samy Aghehowa and held onto the lead until recess.
On resumption, Miami, motivated by Messi, seized control and in the 48th minute, netted the equalizer through Segovia.
Buoyed by the goal, Miami piled more pressure, and in the 53rd minute, Messi displayed sheer football dexterity by slotting straight into the net from a free kick.
Thereafter, Porto tried to reestablish dominion but their efforts failed to yield the desired result even in the last 10 minutes when it made strident attempts in the search.
The victory was the first by any North American side to the championship involving 32 teams.
