A middle aged police Inspector, Okolie Amechi, has died after accidentally being shot by his 10 – year old son.
The incident happened around 9.40 p.m. on Sunday in Awka, Anambra State, where the inspector had been on guard duty at a bank on Zik Avenue by Okeke Street.
The tragedy happened during what was ordinarily was a happy moment between the suspect, Dominion, and his now late dad and his (Dominion’s) younger male siblings, Wisdom and Emmanuel, eight and six years old, respectively.
On the fateful night, all three children had gone, as they often did, to visit their dad at his place of deployment.
As is typical of most children, once they had settled down, they began to play around with virtually every person and object in sight.
In the course of doing that, Dominion allegedly pulled the trigger of his father’s duty arm, an AK-47 which had been cocked ready after being ingested with 30 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition.
The effect was devastating as it was instant.
The bullet ripped open and mangled the spine of his dad, before grazing his younger brother, Emmanuel, on his back and right hand.
Both victims were promptly taken to Amaku Specialist Hospital, Awka, where Inspector Okolie was pronounced dead on arrival.
However, Emmanuel is recovering under treatment.
The matter has been reported at the Central Police Station, Awka, for investigation.
