President Bola Amed Tinubu, today described the National Assembly NASS as a true symbol of Nigeria ‘s democracy.
Tinubu, addressing a joint session of NASS on Democracy Day, said the legislature had been pivotal in Nigeria’ s political history.
He recalled the role the NASS played to stop the alleged Third Term bid of then President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2006, saying it was exemplary and altruistic.
The same spirit of patriotism, he said, was at play when the NASS successfully deployed the Doctrine of Necessity to ensure that then Vice president Good luck Jonathan assumed office and responsibility as President after his principal and President, Umoru Yar’Adua, passed on in office.
He paid tribute to the culture of patriotism exhibited in that circumstance by the NASS members.
The president equally equally recalled how the NASS, under the leadership of Senator Ahmed Ebute, challenged the November 17, 1993 coup of General Sani Abacha, and his abolition of all democratic structures in the country.
According to him, Ebute led members of the NASS to the old Parliament Building in Lagos, where they declared the coup illegal and the Abacha administration as ultra vires.
