To mark the 2025 Democracy Day, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has granted state and partial pardons to 66 inmates at the Maiduguri Maximum Custodial Centre. During a visit to the facility, he also commuted some death sentences to life imprisonment and reduced other jail terms.
“Based on the powers conferred on me… I hereby grant state and partial pardons to 66 inmates…,” Zulum said.
He also pledged to enhance vocational training at the prison, with programs in literacy, numeracy, and digital skills.
“I have directed the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation… to enhance the vocational training centre…,” he added.
Zulum donated 300 bags of rice, 50 jerrycans of oil, five cows, and ₦20,000 cash to each of the 1,280 inmates, to be managed by officials.
Correctional Service Controller Ahmed Bawa and inmate leader Daniel Simon praised the governor for his unprecedented support.
