Athletes Road Mishap: Kano State Govt Declares Monday Public Holiday

By Yadnom Awu/ Asaba

In order to honour the memory of those who died in the road mishap involving athletes of Kano State, the state government has declared tomorrow, Monday June 2, 2025 as a public holiday

The state governor, Abba Yusuf, made the declaration in a press statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary CPS, Bature.
He described the accident as tragic and assured that the government would give the necessary support to all those directly affected.
In the statement, Yusuf said,” It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured.”
He assured of the state government ‘ s support for the victims and urged imams and faithful of other creeds to pray for the repose of the dead, strength for the bereaved families and speedy recovery for the injured.
The mishap occurred when the Coaster bus, which was carrying athletes to the recent National Sports Festival NSF in Ogun State, veered off the road near Gadar Yankifii, on the Kano/ Kaduna highway, at about 12.30 p.m. on Saturday.
The Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC has blamed driver fatigue and over speeding for the crash which involved a Coaster bus with number plate KN O41 A17.
Kano State won 29!medals at the festival, with some of those who won them now dead in the crash.
