Delta, Nigeria’ s single most consistent competitive sports state, has retained the overall Winners’ diadem as the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival (NSF) ends tonight.
Though the final medals tally had yet to be published , the state had, by this evening, set an unassailable lead on the medals table.
As at 7p.m. today, Delta had not only won most gold medals, but had beaten its nearest rival, Bayelsa State, on all medal form entry.
For instance, with just a few medals to collate, Delta had earned 122 gold (Bayelsa has 91), 96 silver(Bayelsa,61), and 105 bronze ( Bayelsa has 70).
Ogun State, Rivers and Edo placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Ogun has 90 gold, 64 silver and 78 bronze medals.
Rivers State has 74 gold, 56 silver and 62 bronze medals, while Edo, the traditional rival of Delta, has 63 gold, 96 silver and 114 bronze medals.
Aside from the National Sports Festival, Delta has won all editions of the National Youth Games, and is home to many of Nigeria’ s most prominent sports talents.
