The Senate has approved ₦124.2 billion budget for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) for the 2024 fiscal year, aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.

The approval came after the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs during plenary on Wednesday. Vice Chairman of the Committee, Senator Yunus Akintunde (APC, Oyo State), said the budget breakdown includes ₦1.2 billion for personnel expenses and ₦98.6 billion earmarked for capital projects.

According to Akintunde, the fund will support key initiatives such as training for police officers, renovation and construction of police stations, and upgrades to vital infrastructure. Additional provisions include the refurbishment of police barracks and clinics, and the acquisition of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles to boost mobility and promote environmentally friendly operations.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while commending the initiative, stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in the implementation of the budget. He urged the Police Affairs Committee to maintain strict oversight to ensure the funds are properly utilized.

Akpabio said, “The expenditures from the Police Trust Fund should directly enhance security across the country.

“The committee must ensure proper oversight so that every Kobo appropriated is used effectively for the benefit of the police and the Nigerian people”.

The Nigeria Police Trust Fund was established to provide additional funding for the training, welfare, and operational efficiency of the police, with the broader goal of enhancing public safety and law enforcement nationwide.
