A gas explosion occurred on Tuesday at the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta, one of the primary venues for the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival.
The incident was triggered when a gas truck supplying fuel to the venue’s generator caught fire, prompting panic among athletes and spectators, many of whom fled the area for safety.
Emergency response teams arrived promptly and were able to contain the blaze, preventing further damage or injuries.
Following the swift intervention, sports events including handball, squash, and badminton have resumed at the venue.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the cause of the explosion or any safety reviews going forward.
