The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismantled a syndicate posing as missionaries and free healthcare providers in the Abuloma area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Acting on a tip-off, NAFDAC officials raided a town hall on Jetty Road last Friday, where unregistered and fake medical products were being administered to unsuspecting residents.
During the operation, a woman identified as Mrs. Gladys Theophilus was arrested while distributing the counterfeit products, which included eye drops, tablets, cleansers, and so-called “supernatural water” — all lacking NAFDAC registration or traceable manufacturers. The group falsely claimed the products could treat conditions like cancer, fibroids, glaucoma, and arthritis.
NAFDAC’s South-South Zonal Director, Chukwuma Oligbu, said some victims suffered adverse effects such as swollen eyes but were told by the fugitive “doctor” that it was a sign of healing. The arrested woman will be charged to court, while the agency continues its search for other members of the syndicate.
Oligbu warned the public against patronizing unverified medical practitioners and emphasized NAFDAC’s commitment to combating counterfeit drugs. He urged citizens to report similar activities to protect public health.
