Gunmen launched a deadly assault on a security checkpoint in Isuofia, located in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the death of a security officer and the burning of an operational vehicle.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday by its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga. The attack occurred on Thursday evening.
According to Ikenga, the joint security team at the checkpoint responded swiftly, engaging the attackers in a fierce gunfight that led to the death of two of the assailants. The remaining gunmen fled the scene, abandoning a Toyota Sienna vehicle and escaping into the surrounding bush.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the attack, calling it a direct affront to the unity and determination of Anambra’s people and their collaboration with security agencies in the fight against crime. He vowed that those responsible would be pursued and brought to justice.
“This unpatriotic act is a test of the collective resolve of Ndi Anambra and the security agencies working together to eliminate criminal elements,” the Commissioner stated. “We will not be deterred and will continue our efforts until the perpetrators are apprehended.”
Ikenga added that normalcy has since been restored in the area, with additional security forces deployed and ongoing operations to track down the fleeing suspects.
